Let’s face it: in autumn and winter, Melbourne’s a coat town. We need something to keep that Antarctic chill at bay and the menswear designers participating in LMFF 2010 have come up with lots of stylish ways to do it.
The two strongest influences for men’s coats in AW10 continue to be biker jackets and military cuts, reworked in everything from shiny PVD to thin, crunchy leather.
Hoods are still happening – Rufus Green marries the suit jacket and hood; Lui Hon has two standalone hoods, one in leather and one in wool, in his collection.
The trench is still a force, too, like From Britten’s featherlight, duster-style artist’s coat to be worn over a layered suit and Limedrop’s slick black storm trench.
While colour is slowly seeping back into menswear – another monochrome season and we would have gone mad – the coats we’re seeing are safely black or neutral.
