Strutting their stuff

LMFF Director, Karen Webster, General Manager of Finance, Events and Operations and Brooke Shell from Ann Morrison PR just spoke at the RSVP Melbourne event (May 26 – 27, at the MCEC). Inside a dome from Inflate Australasia (who are responsible for LMFF’s Sidewalk structure) the leading ladies shared their insight into the ‘behind the scenes’ of fashion and events.

Facilitator Meri Took of Staging Rentals & Construction Services asked the hard questions from how does LMFF statisfy it’s stakeholders to how does one plan for an event 365 days.

Thanks to those of you who popped along for the session.

LMFF meets Garance Doré

LMFF was thrilled to receive an invitation to be part of the celebration with Garance Doré at the exclusive launch of the Winter With Westfield Designer Installation.

Hosted in the Styling Suite at Westfield Doncaster, we were privy to a preview of the collaboration between Garance and seven iconic Australian designers. LMFF is a big fan of Garance’s blog and were very excited to meet her in person, along with her partner Scott Schulman the  man behind the world famous Sartorialist blog.

The collaboration sees the celebrated French illustrator, photographer and blogger team with Arthur Gallan, Bettina Liano, Country Road, Gorman, Leona Edminston, Thurley and Zimmerman.

The question and answer session hosted by Anthea O’Connor from Vogue Australia was insightful and simply inspirational – we’re all eager to start our own blogs after hearing about the fabulous life Garance is leading.

Tony Glenville reflects on LMFF 2010

As I sit back in the UK writing this my LMFF visit is still fresh in my memory; from the rooftop cinema of Friedrich Gray and Romance Was Born on my first night through to the Sofitel Hot Brides on my last afternoon.

I imagine if you have read any of my comments you will want to know what the high spots were? Well the entire bloody week was a high spot!

I loved every minute and loved so many of the clothes and collections; stand outs for me during the week were Fleur Wood, Gary Bigeni, Friedrich Gray, Limedrop, Jayson Brunsden, Six, Timothy Godbold, Aurelio Costerello, Nevenka,  Michael Angel, Jack London, Gorman, Gwendolynne, and two great shows which I loved – Forever New and Target! Akira, Martin Grant, Scanlon and Theodore, Colette Dinnigan, Easton Pearson and others of the establishment showed collections which were of truly international standard – but I knew that already. It was the names which I was surprised by or who were new to me which made my heart beat faster.
The other wonderful thing was meeting up with old friends but making new ones. LMFF must have the single most stupendous Board for an event of this type anywhere in the world – everyone communicated and talked and I learnt things which is surely why we travel and work; to aquire knowledge?! Plus all the teams involved, from the runners upwards were delightful.
I am not going to mention names because it truly was everyone from the drivers to the designers themselves.
So……………….as I wipe a tear away sitting in rain sodden Brighton typing this what is the single thing I want to close with?
Please, please find a reason to ask me back next year……………I promise I’ll do anything you ask.

MYER In-Store Event

We felt privileged to be at the exclusive Myer in-store event last night with some of Myer’s most stylish customers. Already jumping on the key trends of A/W they snapped up wears from Australia’s top designers in the new looks of the season – 80s and 40s inspired ensembles and the new must-have accessories such as the over-the-knee boot and military jacket. Bring on the chills of Winter so we can hit the pavement in our new winter wardrobes!

Westfield launches the LMFF Fashion Bar

Karen Webster, Festival Director officially kicked off the start of LMFF’s activity at Central Pier by launching the LMFF Fashion Bar presented by Westfield Doncaster. Key fashion journalists, international guests to the Festival and Melbourne celebrities attended the launch in anticipation of the first runway showcase in Peninsula; L’Oréal Paris Runway 1 presented by Grazia.

Editor of Harper’s BAZAAR, Edwina McCann was also in attendance as she enlightened the audience with insight into a Fashion Fairytale Exhibition displayed in the bar. The exhibition was of photographs that captured the breathtaking shoot in the April issue of the Harper’s BAZAAR which featured the likes of Natalie Imgruglia, Emma Lung, Rachel Taylor and Sophie Lowe.

Famous faces won’t be the only people spotted throughout the week as Westfield Doncaster is drawing on the importance of YOU with its photographic exhibition, ‘Faces of the Festival’.  The exhibition showcases patrons of the Festival including fashion lovers, stylists, designers and models – make sure you get your photo taken!

Designer Forum

LMFF not only give all of you lovely folk access to the amazing world of fashion but we also love to inspire our designers, brands and retailers! The LMFF Designer Forum presented by Colonial First State Global Assest Management for 2010 did just that.

Talented Australian designer and re-branding whiz Michael Angel, insightful trend forecaster and fashion director Tony Glenville with creative consultant and photo journalist Linlee Allen have all taken to the stage to share their insightful experiences into the world of global fashion, marketing and branding. The experienced trio were led through an innovative discussion on creative direction in international markets by Fashion Director and Creative Consultant, Gabriele Hackwothy.

The conversation inspired and informed to the wealth of talented designers participating in LMFF 2010 who came to hear all the latest news as they navigate their businesses in these challenging times.

L’Oreal Paris luncheon

What a brilliant way to start the Festival week – attending the L’Oreal Paris luncheon with all the Festival VIP’s, designers and guests.

Lunch was delectable – Guy Grossi worked with Central Pier to ensure we all had a wonderful meal but we don’t need to loosen our designer belts before heading to the next event (phew!).

Everyone received a sneak peak of the L’Oreal Paris Runway hair and makeup looks showcased with a designer outfit in a fashion moment – a brilliant way to get everyone Runway ready and excited… if only we had more time to shop!

Calvin Klein dinner

LMFF’s International guests Fransisco Costa and Malcolm Carfrae hosted the elite of Australian media including Alison Veness-McGourty (Grazia) and Grant Pearce (Conde Nast Asia Pacific) for an intimate dinner amongst what felt like a group of old friends. The conversation flowed as did the bubbles while we were all treated to a delectable meal at Melbourne favourite Cutler&Co.

Opening Night After Party

What better way to follow on from the gorgeous surrounds of Government House than at the divine Melbourne institution of Comme. Accessories masters Coach showcased their latest collections while all guests mingled, tasted exquisite canapés and enjoyed more of the same divine beverages – Yering Station, Champagne Devaux, Hoegaarden, Sanpellegrino –  that followed from Government House. A brilliant start to an exciting week!

Opening Party

Once upon a time, in a land not so far away, in a grand white house surrounded by gardens, a very special event was taking place.

Through the curly gates and up the drive arrived the guests of the LMFF Opening Party in their best attire and most elegant gowns. Out front of the fountain was a willy-wonka-bumblebee-banquet of licorice, sherbert, lollies and rafaello, to put a big grin on everyone’s face.

The party began, the Champagne Devaux sparkled and before we knew it, a pied piper pipe band led us through into the ballroom where the real adventure began.

The Harper’s BAZAAR fashion presentation flowed out of a glittering gold castle including Snow White by Dion Lee, Cinderella by Willow, Alice in Wonderland by Colette Dinnigan, 1, 2, 3, wait, 101 Dalmations by Romance was Born and more!

Everywhere we looked the fairytale delights kept coming. And then, the Australian Ballet treated us to a glimpse of The Silver Rose. Truly amazing.

Every fairytale has to have a sombre moment and that would be the farewell of our Festival Director, Karen Webster, who made her last LMFF Opening Party as Director the most enchanting and memorable yet.

International guest and board brunch

It is with much anticipation that I entered the beautiful club lounge of the Sofitel Melbourne On Collins on Sunday where an exquisite brunch was laid out and the views of Melbourne were enhanced by the birds eye view. What a thrill to meet global luminaries of fashion in one room as the VIP guests of the Festival got together for an intimate meet and greet. The brunch presented a wonderful opportunity for everyone to meet the LMFF Board of Directors, executive team and the AMPR crew who orchestrated so much pre-publicity in the lead up to our international guests visit to Melbourne. Personally I was thrilled to catch up with the debonair Francisco Costa, charismatic Malcolm Carfrae, effervescent Linlee Allen, eccentrically charming Tony Glenville, talented Sarah Curran, provocative Paul Bennett and envy inducing twins Miriam and Olivia Nervo, LMFF’s Ambassadors for 2010.
