This year’s Business Seminar welcomed some of the world’s most influential creative thinkers from the world of branding. Leading global trend forecasting and analysis company, WGSN.com were on hand to capture and summarise the key trends discussed throughout the day which, if you are already a WGSN subscribing customer, is now available on their website www.wgsn.com along with LMFF’s Fashion Industry Forum: Retail Detail report. If you are not a current subscriber you can get your sneak peak below and, exclusively for LMFF readers, download a full copy of the report at the end of this post.

Pictured: Graeme Fidler of Bally

This year’s L’Oréal Melbourne Fashion Festival Business Seminar shone the spotlight on branding’s role in business, with brand equity , leverage and establishing a unique selling point all noted as crucial factors. The seminar, titled Brand: The Essence of Business, saw presentations from Acne Studios’ executive chairman Mikael Schiller, Esprit’s creative and business executives Jan Nord and Jorgen Andersson, the Dazed Group’s founder and editorial director Jefferson Hack, and Graeme Fidler, co-creative director of Bally.

Pictured: Jefferson Hack of Dazed Group

Host Robyn Holt, former editor-in-chief of Australian Vogue Living, brought branding’s role into focus by saying that as a result of the global financial crisis, consumers had become accustomed to discount sales and were reluctant to pay full price. “Customers are intent on saving at levels we haven’t seen for a decade,” she said. “In today’s tough climate, how do you attract people to your brand and keep them there?”

Pictured: Mikael Schiller of ACNE

The vital importance of creative freedom – the heart of a distinctive brand – resonated throughout the seminar, and Acne’s Schiller said that despite the company having a raft of high-powered specialists, it has ignored one area considered by many as essential for a profitable business. “We have no one who does strategic marketing,” he said. “Our approach is very intuitive. It’s not about marketing. It’s about creating great things.”

Fashion Weekend at LMFF presented by Shop Til You Drop provided us with three whole days of shopping the designer sales at Central Pier. With our brand new wardrobe we were ready to take on the LMFF Trunk Show-Ready to Wear presented by City of Stonnington.

Effortlessly classy in Not Your Daughter’s Jeans

LMFF Sidewalk-Cotton On presented by City of Melbourne and The Herald Sun was frothy fun with feathers, paper mache sea creatures and sequin masks adding dress up party excitement to each outfit.

Saccharine sweet in Cotton On

There was romance in the air at the LMFF Trunk Show-Bridal presented by City of Stonnington. Women in the crowd were prepared to propose to themselves if it meant being able to don one of these creations for even an afternoon.

L’Oreal Paris Runway 7 presented by Cosmopolitan had designs by Alannah Hill, Bettina Liano, Joveeba, Maurie and Eve, Tallulah, Wayne Cooper and White Suede sharing the limelight with lots of playful ensembles.

A goddess in Wayne Cooper

LMFF Offsite Runways 1 and 2 supported by Yen were a festival first, a perfect way to close the festival with something completely new and original. Located at the Penthouse Mouse at Shed 4, Docklands designs by Alexi Freeman, Jolet, Leonard Street, Livia Arena, One Fell Swoop, Metias, Thanh, above, Arj Selvam, Extinct, House of Baulch, Kuwaii and Trimapee. The Penthouse Mouse Bar was open before, between and after the Offsite Runways. It was fitted out with a band and neon signage, a fitting backdrop to allow all to loosen their ties and toast the week that was.

Following his win of the L’Oréal Melbourne Fashion Festival Designer Award presented by Woolmark, supported by Vogue Australia, Dion Lee has continued to reach amazing heights and we are so proud to be part of the network that is supporting his growth.

At only 24 and with just four finished collections to his fast growing reputation, the Sydney based designer took out the highly coveted LMFF Designer Award at an invitation only event during LMFF 2010.

Dion was amongst a high starndard of finalists, including Gary Bigeni, Dhini, Therese Rawsthorne, Konstantina Mittas, Lui Hon and Gail Sorronda.

Most recently Dion hosted a solo show, Facade, as part of the RAFW schedule which was supported by Woolmark. Facade showcased Dion’s Spring Summer 2010/2011 collection at the Sydney Opera House to rave reviews from both local and global media. It’s mind-blowing to think that only two years ago Dion Lee showed his graduate collection with three other students from Sydney TAFE.

By winning the LMFF Designer Award, Dion Lee will receive assistance from Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) to ensure his fashion career reaches new heights. His creative and technical genius, coupled with AWI’s support in implementing exciting wool and wool blend textiles is expected to lead to cutting edge garments worthy of international acclaim.

AWI has revealed to LMFF that it’s anticipated that Dion’s work will carry the Woolmark swing tickets and sew labels in future collections.

The LMFF Designer Award prize includes $10,000 cash plus an AWI-hosted trip to either the Pitti Filati fashion fair in Florence or the Première Vision trade event in Paris with introductions to AWI’s global supply chain network of spinners, knitters and mills. Dion recently told LMFF that he has decided to go to Première Vision trade event in Paris. We can’t wait to hear what this trip full of creative musings will deliver in his next collection.

LMFF wishes Dion the very best and looks forward to watching his bright star continue to shine both on our shores and off.

If you are fans of Liv and Mim Nervo on Facebook you’ll be well aware of their amazing success post LMFF 2010. As the LMFF 2010 Ambassadors they did a phenomenal job of promoting Australian design talent and creating a positive and fun vibe at all the Festival activities they attended. They fell in love with several Australian designers and brands and have been flying the flag ever since.

The Nervo’s have just arrived in Los Angeles after recording with Kylie Minogue in London over the weekend. This follows their astounding success as artists, releasing a track under the name Nervo. Only last week the Nervo’s single ‘This Kind of Love’ went number two in the music week pop charts (download here from iTunes). LMFF wishes the very best of luck to this dynamic duo! They are destined to be a huge hit and we’re so thrilled we could be part of their success this year.

We have also received some overwhelming feedback and congratulations from all corners of the globe. We couldn’t help but share the success of L’Oréal Melbourne Fashion Festival 2010 with you and also send out a thank you for your involvement and support.

“I really believed in the Festival and your vision and care deeply about the future of it. I sincerely cherished my time in Melbourne and felt very privileged to be included in this year’s event.” Linlee Allen, speaker at the LMFF 2010 Designer Forum

WOW my life has changed. I have never had such an incredible day of information and inspiration that has made me really think about how the world of fashion is moving forward. What a thrill to have experienced the 2010 LMFF Business Seminar. People like Sarah Curran (from mywardrobe.com) and Sojin Lee (from fashionair.com) have changed the way we experience fashion revolutionising fashion retail and media online. Paul Bennett is an agent provocateur and the world needs more people like him who turn our business worlds upside down. I was equally inspired by the charismatic Christian Blankaert who has challenged my perception of luxury. Finally what a delight to hear from the dynamic duo of fashion Malcolm Carfrae and Francisco Costa from Calvin Klein inspiring the audience with their humble brilliance.

Beautiful jewel toned dresses, embellished separates in a range of gorgeous fabrics and an array of classic skirt styles, Review’s Sidewalk show featuring their “Winter Wonderland” collection was simple yet sophisticated.

A subtle but very fashionable take on the Alice in Wonderland theme ran through out the entire show, which featured several key outfits that I could have easily tucked into my bag at the end of the show! Loved, loved, loved the blush pink and steel grey A line skirt!

Cannot wait to see what the rest of the collection includes when it hits the stores later this month.

If this is the future of fashion then beam me up Scotty! The amazing showcase of student collections was supported by established designer collaborators Sportsgirl and what a show it was. Inspiring, energetic and invigorating this show really puts the Australian fashion institutes on show and we should all be proud!

Theatrical light and sound set the stage for the recently graduated designers of Metamorphosis Student Showcase to wow the audience with their innovative, avant garde collections. As yet unconstrained by the commercial realities of producing wearable, accessible garments, the 12 graduates from around the country showed collections that experimented and played with notions of fashion from a variety of perspectives.

The results were at times dramatic, extraordinary and elegant, as each designer presented his/her unique comment on fashion.

The Runway was presented by Madison, who brought a ‘new polish’ theme to the show which was brought to life through the hair and make-up looks: a dark wine lip and 50s inspired hair that carried across all the designer sections by the amazingly talented Melbourne stylist Kate Gaskin.

From a beautiful and motley crew of seven, only one could win the golden ticket that is the 2010 LMFF Designer Award presented by Woolmark, supported by VOGUE Australia. Appropriately shrouded in a set of black and gold cleverly designed by local company Moth, over 300 industry folk gathered to give praise to the ‘new’, best and brightest fashion designers that Australia has to offer.

Dhini, Gail Sorronda, Therese Rawsthorne, Lui Hon, Dion Lee, Konstantina Mittas and Gary Bigeni all showed us the potential of our industry last night by presenting confident and cohesive collections with distinctive and original signatures.

DJ Leigh Irwin added a moody flavour to the event. A highlight for me was the choice of Melbournian songstress New Buffalo – what a sweet charmer.

When Dion Lee was announced as the winner a cheer went up from the crowd including the nominees who showed a cheeky level of friendship and mutual support of each other. They made this event a pleasure to work on.

Congratulations to the nominees, the humble winner, the presenting partner Woolmark and supporting magazine partner Vogue Australia for their involvement in helping to conjure a strong, creativity led industry. And to all at LMFF – we’ve earned that champagne! Cheers, till the next one!
